FTC sends additional refunds to eligible Office Depot customers

The FTC is sending payments to people who paid Office Depot for computer repair services.

According to a complaint filed by the FTC, Office Depot and its software supplier, Support.com, configured a virus scanning program so whenever customers answered yes to at least one of four “diagnostic” questions, the program reported that it found symptoms of malware or infections—even when that was not true. The false scan results were then used to persuade people to purchase computer repair services.

The FTC first sent checks in February 2020 and the second round of checks in August 2022. These distributions resulted in more than $33.4 million in refunds. Because there is still money in the fund, the FTC is sending 8,005 checks totaling more than $353,000 to people who cashed their second check and paid Office Depot more than $500.

If you get a check, please cash it within 90 days.
